vmware ESXi - card readers

Hi

I would like to access two usb card readers from one of my guest OS'es (linux) under vmware ESXi.

How do you suggest I solve this problem?

My understanding is that ESXi doesn't let the guest OS see any usb units. So I guess I'll have to setup another standalone server to host this usb-over-network.

Or is there a way to install the usb-over-network on the ESXi itself and provide access to the guest OS'es?

Hello.

Could you please specify whether ESXi is installed on Linux PC?

Hello.

I'm not sure if I understand your question or if you have misunderstood me.

ESXi is not something you can install under the GNU/Linux OS it's a virtualization layer you install on the server BEFORE any other guest OS'es.

So I take it that you don't have a oem.tgz install for your software based on your answer.

Read more about custom oem.tgz for ESXi here :

I am sorry for being unclear.

What I need to know is what are operating systems
of your Client and Server PCs.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

I think this is leading nowhere and that this is not a possible sollutions for me. (Reffering to the inclusion of this sollution directly under vmware ESXi.)

So let's drop that question.

I'll just go with the following:

The server on my network running vmware ESXi (I'm not sure if you understand this virtualization layer?) with several guest OS'es (including one GNU/Linux Slackware 12)

That guest OS would be the "client" (as of this usb over network terminology).

And thus need another physical server to host the actual usb units as a "server" for usb over network.

My hope was to be able to include the "server" part via oem.tgz in vmware ESXi and let the guest OS be the "client" and by that way save me one hardware server (running as a "server") - but it seems not possible.

Thanks anyway.

Well, it is possible in theory, but to realize this scenario you need root access to your ESXi system.
Have ever installed any other products to this system?

I've got root access, since it's my own server in my own house.
But I'll search for another sollution.

It's a pity. Anyway, we have clarified the scenario you were about to follow at least.
